Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is located south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and has the largest population with the second-largest land territory by area of all the emirates, after Abu Dhabi. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature. The earliest recorded mention of Dubai is in 1095, and the earliest settlement known as Dubai town dates from 1799. Dubai was formally established in the early 19th century by the Al Abu Falasa clan of Bani Yas, and it remained under clan control when the United Kingdom assumed the protection of Dubai in 1892. Its geographical location made it an important trading hub and by the beginning of the 20th century, it was an important port. In 1966, the year oil was discovered, Dubai and the emirate of Qatar set up a new monetary unit to replace the Gulf Rupee.

Citing unnamed US officials and corporate documents, the newspaper said that Erik Prince, who came to live in the United Arab Emirates last year after his security business faced mounting legal problems in the United States, is using $529 million from the sheikdom to complete the mission. The force is intended to conduct special operations missions inside and outside the country, defend oil pipelines and skyscrapers from terrorist attacks and put down internal revolts, the report said. Such troops could be deployed if the Emirates faced unrest or were challenged by pro-democracy demonstrations in its crowded labor camps in the oil fields or democracy protests like those sweeping the Arab world this year, the paper noted. Fake Gang Leader in UAE Arrested The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lieutenant General, Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the arrest of a "fake" gang leader who was causing panic amongst internet users by posting video clips that show him abusing his victims. The Sharjah police arrested the fake gang leader RAA whom goes by the name "Dangour" on June 17. The suspect appeared to be a 24-year-old Arab man who broadcast video clips on the internet showing his fabricated crimes. The Sharjah police received instructions from the interior minister and started scrutinizing the film's content, which show Dangour rapping while he tortures and blackmails his victims. Once authorities were able to determine the videos were fake, they devised an operation to arrest the suspect and his sister who both confessed to their crimes. The suspect said he wanted to grab peoples attention and copycat criminals involved in cinematographic work. Investigations had shown that Dangour was unemployed and had not finished his schooling. Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed said that these alleged crimes negatively impact the reputation of the country. He also thanked all the people that reported the incident to the police via his Facebook and Twitter accounts, and urged all UAE residents to work together in eliminating such behaviors which don't comply with the cultural and traditional values of the nation. Emirati Arabi, beffa tutti con il rigore di tacco! Awana Diab stupisce andando in gol con un colpo di tacco dal dischetto nella partita contro il Libano. L'allenatore, però, lo sostituisce: troppo arrogante Fantastico Rigore di Tacco di Awana Diab (UAE) vs Libano - Incredible Penalty his is gonna be HUGE... so remember where you saw it first. Sunday served up a handful of unimportant international friendlies, but one match in the Middle East produced a moment that will definitely go viral. The UAE played host to Lebanon, and the hosts crushed their guests 6-2. The story of the match was not the scoreline though, but rather the final goal of the game. In the 78th minute the UAE had a penalty and Awana Diab took responsibility for the kick. Things started normally as he began his run-up, but crazily, the number 13 spun a 180 midway towards the ball. Then, in one of the most unsportsmanlike, arrogant, and yet truly hysterical incidents, Diab backheeled the penalty on goal. The cherry on the top arrived when, despite the spot-kick being pretty awful, the lame Lebanon keeper just watched it trickle into the net. Afterwards some of the Lebanese team threatened to start some argy-bargy for the disrespect, but it all fizzled out fast.

According to the New York Times, the UAE has purchased an up to 800 strong army of mercenaries and Erik Prince, founder and former owner of Blackwater is behind it all. Considering the Arab spring that's taken the Middle East and Northern Africa by storm this year. And apparently Prince has one rule: hire no Muslims, as they can't be counted on to kill fellow Muslims. So is this starting a new era of hired guns, and mercenary armies? And, is it completely legal? University of Virginia Law School's Christopher Swift discusses.

The UAE Armed Forces, consisting of 50000 troops, are headquartered in Abu Dhabi and are primarily responsible for the defense of the seven emirates. Although small in number, the UAE armed forces are equipped with some of the most modern weapon systems, purchased from a variety of countries. In 2009, the UAE was the largest foreign buyer of US defense equipment. The military has been reducing the number of foreign nationals in its ranks, and its officer corps is composed almost entirely of UAE nationals. The UAE air force has about 4000 personnel. The Air Force has advanced US F-16 BLOCK 60 multi-role fighter aircraft. Other equipment includes French Mirage 2000-9 fighters, British Hawk trainer aircraft, 36 transport aircraft and US Apache and Black Hawk helicopters. The UAE Navy is small--about 2500 personnel--and maintains 12 well-equipped coastal patrol boats and 8 missile boats. Although primarily concerned with coastal defense, the Navy is constructing a six-unit class of blue water corvettes in conjunction with French shipbuilder CMN. The UAE's Land Forces are equipped with several hundred French LeClerc tanks and a similar number of Russian BMP-3 armored fighting vehicles. The UAE Special Operations Command (SOC) is a small but effective force centered on the counter-terrorism mission within the UAE SOC is well-financed, trained, and equipped and currently has soldiers deployed in Afghanistan, the only Arab personnel undertaking full-scale operations in the country.
